Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is an authorization for off-campus practical training or experiential learning for students in F-1 immigration status who have not graduated.
What is Curricular Practical Training (CPT)?
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is an authorization for practical training or experiential learning for students in F-1 immigration status. You might hear CPT referred to as “work authorization” or “employment authorization”. Please know that any off-campus practical training experience (paid or unpaid) may require CPT authorization.
Eligible students may seek authorization for off-campus practical experience that is directly related to their major field of study. The purpose of CPT is to apply the knowledge and skills F-1 students are gaining in the classroom to practical experience in the U.S.
CPT is a benefit of maintaining your F-1 student immigration status. CPT is not a separate visa category and does not require “sponsorship” from an employer. You must have an offer to apply for CPT. CPT is only available before you complete your degree program and should not be used to extend your SEVIS program end date/degree completion.
You must have CPT authorization before you can start your practical training experience.

Am I eligible for CPT?
Current students might be eligible for CPT if they are:
- Degree-seeking with declared major listed on their I-20
- General studies and students who are in a non-degree program, including VISP, exchange, and certificate programs are not eligible
- Enrolled full-time for one full academic year (2 consecutive semesters) in valid U.S. immigration status. This may include:
-
- Transfer students who have transferred their I-20/SEVIS record to UW–Madison
-
-
- Transfer students may be asked to submit their transcript from their previous school to show proof that they were enrolled full-time
- Not all students are eligible, please contact your ISS advisor
- Transfer students may be asked to submit their transcript from their previous school to show proof that they were enrolled full-time
-
-
- UW–Madison students who changed education levels and were issued a “change of level” I-20
-
-
- Students going from an undergraduate level to graduate level will need to complete 2 semesters at the new degree level to be eligible for CPT
-
-
-
- Please discuss with an ISS advisor if you are changing education levels and considering CPT
-
-
- Students who have changed visa status to F-1. Eligibility depends on the previous visa status and if the student was enrolled full-time for one academic year.
-
-
- Please discuss with an ISS advisor if you are changing visa status and considering CPT
-
- Have an offer for a practical training opportunity directly related to their major and degree level listed on the I-20
- Enrolled in an appropriate CPT course (as determined by the department), or a practical training opportunity is required to earn the degree
-
- If you drop your course, you also lose your CPT authorization
You must always make satisfactory progress toward completing your degree program. Satisfactory progress is defined by each school/college or department. Definitions can be found in the UW–Madison Guide.
Quick Facts
- CPT is authorization for a practical training experience that occurs before you graduate.
- You must have CPT authorization before you can start your practical training experience. CPT is authorized by a Designated School Official (DSO) at ISS. If your request is approved, ISS will issue you a new I-20 with CPT authorization on page 2.
- There are many types of practical training experiences that require CPT authorization: internships, co-ops, practicums, volunteer work, unpaid internships, and more.
- If you’re not sure if your experience requires CPT, please contact an ISS advisor.
- CPT is employer-specific, you must submit a new CPT request for each employer.
- You must have an offer before applying for CPT.
- Your offer must be directly related to your major. Questions about if a practical training experience is related to your major should be directed to your career advisor or academic advisor.
- CPT is term-specific, you must request CPT each term that you will have practical training experience.
- You must be enrolled in a specific CPT course each term that you have a CPT authorization, unless your practical training is required by your degree program with no course enrollment. Details about CPT courses can be found here.
- You must always make satisfactory progress toward completing your degree program.
Types of CPT
This is an accordion element with a series of buttons that open and close related content panels.
Required by your degree program
- This means that a practical training experience is required of all students in your program to graduate
- ISS requires documentation from the UW–Madison Guide as part of your CPT application. You must include, at minimum:
-
- Course number or non-credit requirement
-
- Name of faculty teaching the course
-
- Course description and objectives
Optional or elective of your degree program
- Participation in an optional or elective CPT is a benefit of maintaining your F-1 status. It cannot delay your program completion. As an F-1 student, your primary purpose in the U.S. is to earn a degree, so it is important to prioritize your studies.
- Course enrollment in a CPT course is required (typically 1 to 3 credits).
- Talk to your academic/faculty advisor and an appropriate career advisor for possible CPT course enrollment options and permission to enroll.
Accelerated master’s program without CPT requirement
F-1 Federal Regulations limits where and when F-1 visa holders can work while within the U.S. Students starting an accelerated master’s degree, that does not have a practical training requirement, in fall 2024 and after, will see a change in practice so that ISS is meeting the Graduate School rules and the Federal Regulations.
- Full-time CPT can be authorized in a fall or spring semester ONLY if there is a practical training degree requirement for all students in the program.
- CPT can be authorized part-time in fall or spring semester as long as the student is also enrolled in credits that are required for their degree, physical presence in Madison is required to meet in-person credits.
- CPT can be authorized full-time or part-time in the summer term for students who have been in valid F-1 status for at least 2 semesters
- If summer term is your final term, only part-time CPT can be authorized and physical presence in Madison is required to meet your in-person credits
Your CPT must be authorized for either part-time or full-time.
- Part-time CPT- 20 hours or less per week
- Full-time CPT- more than 20 hours per week
CPT Application Process
You can start preparing to apply for CPT before you have a job offer by speaking with your academic advisor about your CPT course enrollment options and the steps to enroll in that course. Below are the steps to apply for CPT authorization:
This is an accordion element with a series of buttons that open and close related content panels.
1. Receive an offer for practical training
Seek a position directly related to your degree program (the major and degree level listed on your I-20). You must be offered the position before you submit your CPT application.
2. Receive CPT letter from employer
ISS is required to report information about your practical training offer when authorizing you for CPT. We have created a CPT letter template that your employer can use. Carefully read through the letter requirements. Any missing or unclear information on your CPT letter will delay your CPT request.
3. Get approval from your academic or career advisor
- Before you can be approved for CPT, you will need to enroll in a CPT course. Speak with your academic or career advisor for permission to enroll in the CPT course.
- You must share your CPT offer letter with your academic or career advisor. They will need to complete a verification for your CPT offer in Terra Dotta.
- See step 5 for more information.
4. Enroll in CPT course
- Once you have permission, enroll in the CPT course. You will need to submit proof of enrollment in your CPT course in Terra Dotta.
- Summer CPT – due to the high number of requests for summer CPT authorization, ISS has a pre-review period, before summer enrollment opens. Students can submit their CPT request in Terra Dotta for pre-review. Read more in the Summer CPT section.
5. Complete and submit CPT application in Terra Dotta
To be authorized for CPT, you must submit a CPT application in Terra Dotta. Follow the steps below:
- Login to Terra Dotta using your UW NetID and password
- From the “Current F-1 Students” page, select “Curricular Practical Training”
- Select the term your employment will begin
- Carefully read the Instructions and Learning Content
- Upload the following documents:
- Employment or CPT letter
- Enrollment verification
- Proof of CPT course enrollment
- Proof of practical training requirement is optional unless required for your degree
- Complete the following questionnaires:
- CPT Information
- This information should match your employment letter and advisor verification
- For “supervisor information,” do not list your academic advisor
- Under “additional remarks,” please mention if you are working remotely
- Document Mailing Information
- This is to let ISS know how you would like to receive your new I-20
- ISS will always upload an electronic version I-20 to Terra Dotta
- CPT Information
- Send a verification request to the person who has given you permission to enroll in the CPT course. This may be your career advisor, academic advisor, or faculty advisor
- Read and sign the E-signature
- Submit the form (ISS is unable to review until a complete application has been submitted)
6. Receive your CPT I-20 from ISS
Your CPT I-20 will be uploaded to the Attached Documents section of your CPT request in Terra Dotta. Remember to sign your name on page 1 of your I-20 in blue ink. Your CPT authorization will be on page 2 of your I-20.
Make note of the authorization dates, employer, full-time/part-time status, and location. If any of that information changes, you must submit a new CPT request in Terra Dotta.
- Processing time is 3 weeks (15 business days, apply early!)
- If you apply after your requested start date, you application will be rejected and you will be asked to upload a new employment letter with a future start date
- Remember: working without authorization is a violation of your F-1 status and will cause your status to be terminated
If you need to change the dates of your CPT authorization (either shorten or extend), you must submit a new CPT request in Terra Dotta.
- It is not possible to change your CPT dates after your CPT authorization has ended
- If you have questions or are facing difficulties please send an information request to your ISS advisor.
If you are extending your CPT authorization:
- CPT course enrollment must be verified by your career or academic advisor before CPT authorization can be granted.
- If your CPT will extend into the following semester, you will need to enroll in a CPT course for that semester or term.
Employment Options
CPT allows you to apply your academic knowledge in a practical, real-world setting. It must be directly related to your major field of study and you may not seek employment based on enrollment in a certificate program or minor.
- Reminder: working without authorization is a violation of F-1 status
- Eligible practical training experiences
- Ineligible practical training experiences
- On-campus employment and CPT
There are many different names for practical training experiences that require CPT authorization. These include, but are not limited to:
- Internship (unpaid or paid)
- Co-op
- Employment
- Practicum
- Volunteering
- Teaching placements
- Experiential learning
The following types of employment are not eligible for CPT:
- Self-employment
- Creating a start-up
- Working for another student at the same degree level
- Working for another F/J student visa holder
CPT and on-campus employment are separate authorizations. You are eligible for employment authorization as long as you maintain your F-1 status. It is possible to have an on-campus job and CPT authorization at the same time.
- On-campus employment does not require additional authorization by ISS. CPT always requires authorization by ISS before you can begin your employment.
Considerations for on-campus employment and CPT
- Your primary purpose in the U.S. is to earn a degree. Employment is a benefit of maintaining your F-1 status. It is important to prioritize your studies.
- You are required to maintain valid F-1 status, including full-time enrollment during the fall and spring semesters. Full-time enrollment is required for summer term if you are in your first or last semester.
- If you are considering a combination of CPT and on-campus employment that totals more than 20 hours per week, meet with your ISS advisor about your plans.
- We encourage you to consider your wellness and work-life balance as you determine which employment opportunities you wish to pursue.
- Consider accessing UHS’s resources as you manage your workload.
Limitations to on-campus employment and CPT
- CPT can be authorized part-time (20 hours or less per week) or full-time (over 20 hours per week). CPT authorization is for off-campus practical training experiences.
- There are limits for eligibility on full-time authorization. Meet with your ISS advisor to discuss this option.
- On-campus employment is allowed for up to 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. There is no exception to this rule.
- There is no immigration limit on the hours per week you can work during authorized breaks (winter break, spring break, and summer break). However, the limit is 29 hours per week for most positions at UW–Madison.
- We recommend that you consult with your employing department(s) and other funding sources for additional rules that may limit your work hours.
We encourage you to use the many career-related resources available to UW–Madison students to help you find the right practical training opportunity for you!
Paid vs. Unpaid CPT
CPT authorization is more than just employment authorization to accept compensation. CPT provides a framework for you to apply your academic knowledge in a practical, real-world setting.
- Authorization is required for all paid practical training experiences. Payment includes any remuneration or compensation, such as money, meals, lodging, transportation, etc.
- Authorization for unpaid practical training experiences is strongly recommended. If the unpaid experience is directly related to your degree program, you should apply for CPT authorization.
It is important to make a distinction between volunteering and unpaid practical training. The U.S. Department of Labor defines a volunteer as an “individual who performs hours of service…for civic, charitable, or humanitarian reasons, without promise, expectation or receipt of compensation for services rendered.” There is typically no direct supervision or mentorship for a volunteer position.
Common volunteer places include a literacy network, homeless shelter, food pantry, animal shelter, etc. Badger Volunteers is a campus resource for volunteer and public service activities.
A volunteer position must meet the following conditions:
- No expectation of compensation
- The volunteer cannot displace a genuine employee
- The services provided by the volunteer should not be the same services for which he or she was previously paid and/or expects to be hired and paid for in the future
- Services are performed for a non-profit organization for public service, religious or humanitarian objective
- Work at a for-profit entity is considered employment and must be for pay, or must meet the criteria for an unpaid internship (see above). CPT is strongly recommended for unpaid internships.
If your experience meets the volunteer criteria, then employment authorization is likely not required. Meet with your ISS advisor to confirm.
If you engage in volunteer activities, ISS recommends that you get a letter from the volunteer organization to keep in your permanent records. A template volunteer letter is provided in the “Volunteering at UW–Madison” section below.
The Office of Workforce Relations has drafted Volunteer Information and Best Practices. The document includes links to a Volunteer Fact Sheet for Departments and Volunteers and a UW–Madison Volunteer Letter Template for departments.
An unpaid internship is a common example of when you should request CPT authorization. UW–Madison adopts the National Association of Colleges & Employers (NACE) definition of an internship,
An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships give students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent.
UW–Madison follows the seven NACE criteria to determine an internship, which builds upon the U.S. Department of Labor criteria for an unpaid internship. If your offer meets the following criteria, you should request CPT authorization.
- The experience must be an extension of the classroom: a learning experience that provides for applying the knowledge gained in the classroom. It must not be simply to advance the operations of the employer or be the work that a regular employee would routinely perform.
- The skills or knowledge learned must be transferable to other employment settings.
- The experience has a defined beginning and end, and a job description with desired qualifications.
- There are clearly defined learning objectives/goals related to the professional goals of the student’s academic coursework.
- There is supervision by a professional with expertise and educational and/or professional background in the field of the experience.
- There is routine feedback by the experienced supervisor.
- There are resources, equipment, and facilities provided by the host employer that support learning objectives/goals.
If you have an unpaid internship or practical training experience where CPT is not possible, it is important that you and your supervisor understand the Department of Labor criteria. We recommend that you get a letter to acknowledge your unpaid position, including job duties, dates, location, and supervisor, and that you received no remuneration or compensation for the duties performed.
If your department does not have a course enrollment option for CPT for an unpaid internship, requesting authorization for pre-completion OPT may be an option. You should plan 3-5 months in advance to apply for OPT.
You should always consult an ISS advisor before accepting an unpaid position. If the federal government determines that your unpaid experience should have had practical training authorization, you could face the following consequences:
- denial of your USCIS application for OPT
- potential accrual of unlawful presence
- ineligibility for future visas that allow for work authorization, such as H-1B, O-1, TN, or permanent residency
A practicum allows a student to integrate what they have learned in the classroom to a real- world work setting with the supervision of a professional in that field of study.
If your degree program requires you to complete a practicum or series of practica, you may need CPT authorization. This will depend on the level of “hands on” practical training involved in your practicum experience. “Hands on” experience is when you are learning by actively doing or performing tasks versus learning in a book or traditional classroom setting. You are taking more of an active role instead of being an inactive observer. Consult with your academic advisor for clarification of practicum in your degree program.
Some examples of “hands on” experience may include:
- Developing the curriculum and actively teaching a class (education major)
- Taking the lead to conduct home visits or client meetings (social work major)
ISS has defined practicum “tiers” to help clarify when CPT authorization is recommended and when it is likely not required.
- Tier 1: Observation or Shadowing
- If the objective of the practicum is primarily your observation or shadowing of a professional in your field of study with little or no “hands-on” experience, CPT is not required.
- Tier 2: Shadowing and Hands-on Training
- If the objective of the practicum is your observation or shadowing of a professional in your field of study and up to 50% “hands-on” experience, CPT is strongly recommended.
- Tier 3: Hands-on Training
- If the objective of the practicum is primarily (51% or more) your “hands-on” training and experience, CPT is required.
CPT Course Enrollment
- You must be enrolled in a CPT course during the term in which your CPT authorization occurs, unless not required by your degree.
- Be aware that adding a CPT course may have an impact on your tuition and fees.
- Talk to your academic/faculty advisor and an appropriate career advisor for possible CPT course enrollment options and permission to enroll.
- A list of Career Services Offices, by college or school, can be found on this website. Your academic department may also have a career advisor for your specific major.
- Please talk to your ISS advisor before dropping your CPT course, you will lose your CPT authorization.
- Failure to complete the CPT course will result in your falling out of legal F-1 status.
- If these do not fit your situation, or you do not want to enroll for an optional/elective of your degree program for your practical training experience, then Optional Practical Training (OPT) may be an option. You can review the CPT-vs-OPT Handout to assess which option is right for you.
- SuccessWorks Inter-LS 260
- Dissertators
- Coursework completed
- Directed/independent study courses
- Practical training requirement
- If your academic department, school, or college does not have a specific CPT course, or if you are not eligible to enroll in that course, Inter-LS 260 through SuccessWorks may be an alternative option
- The course is open to any UW-Madison undergraduate student, regardless of year in school or major. Enrollment priority will be given to L&S students
- If you have questions about this course, please email careercourses@ls.wisc.edu
Your dissertator research credits can be used for CPT authorization if your CPT is related to your dissertation research
Are you a masters research or PhD student who has completed their coursework?
- Your research credits can be used for CPT authorization if your CPT is related to your research
- You can also apply to ISS for a “coursework completed” reduced course load (RCL). With an approved coursework completed RCL, you can enroll in 2 credits.
- Enrollment in directed/independent study courses for practical training experiences should have a written plan of study and should be no more than 3 credits
- Undergraduates must follow UW–Madison policy for directed/independent study enrollment.
If practical training is required by your degree program with no course enrollment
- Upload proof of this degree requirement to your CPT request in Terra Dotta. This can typically be found in your program’s Guide or handbook
CPT by Term
You may request CPT authorization during the fall or spring semesters. You are required to maintain valid F-1 status, including full-time enrollment during the fall and spring semesters. At all times, you must continue to make satisfactory progress toward completing your degree program. Satisfactory progress is defined by each school/college or department. Definitions can be found in the UW–Madison Guide.
CPT cannot delay your degree completion, unless it is a degree requirement. As an F-1 student, your primary purpose in the U.S. is to earn a degree. CPT is a benefit of maintaining your F-1 status, so you must prioritize your studies.
Semester CPT dates
- Fall CPT dates:
-
- Earliest start date: day after 8-week summer session ends
-
- Latest end date: day before Spring semester begins
- Spring CPT dates:
-
- Earliest start date: day after Fall semester classes end
-
- Latest end date: day before 8-week summer session begins
See the Academic Calendar for exact dates of each term
Full-time CPT during fall/spring semester:
Full-time CPT will likely impact your academic progress and visa status. Proceed cautiously. Contact your academic and ISS advisor to discuss the risks as well as your eligibility for full-time CPT.
Some courses used for CPT count as full-time enrollment during the fall and spring semesters. Talk to your academic/faculty advisor and a career advisor in your school or college for possible CPT course enrollment and permission to enroll.
Full-time enrollment during the summer is generally not required for continuing students (that is, students who enrolled full-time for the spring semester and intend to enroll full-time for the fall semester).
During the summer, you can be authorized for full-time or part-time CPT anywhere in the U.S. unless summer is your final term. If summer is your final term, you must meet the requirements of CPT During Your Final Semester.
Requirements
- Summer enrollment in a CPT course is required if your CPT authorization is for the summer (generally May-August)
- The CPT course is typically 1-3 credits during the summer term
- Confirm summer enrollment requirements with your academic/faculty advisor and your employing department if you are a graduate assistant
- You must intend to enroll full-time during the following fall semester (or have an approved ISS RCL)
Summer CPT dates
- Earliest start date: day after spring semester classes end
- Latest end date: day before fall semester begins
- See the Academic Calendar for exact dates of each term
CPT Pre-Review (summer only)
Students who plan to do CPT during the summer can submit their summer CPT request in Terra Dotta early for pre-review by an ISS advisor. If your application is correct and complete, with exception of course enrollment, ISS will place it in “pre-reviewed” status until you are able to enroll in Summer courses. If anything is missing or incorrect in your application it will be rejected, and you will need to re-submit once the information is corrected.
Once summer enrollment opens, ISS will confirm with the Registrar that you are enrolled in the CPT course. You do not need to submit a copy of your course list and you do not need to contact your ISS advisor once you enroll. Once ISS confirms your enrollment in the CPT course, we will finish processing your CPT request and issue your I-20 with CPT authorization.
Processing timeline for CPT pre-review:
- Pre-review: 15 business days from when you submit your application
- CPT Approval: Starting the first day of the Summer enrollment period, 15 business days from when you enroll in your CPT course
Once summer enrollment opens, you are required to follow the standard procedure for CPT authorization and upload your course list in Terra Dotta.
You can do part-time or full-time CPT during your final semester only if you meet all of the following requirements:
- You are enrolled for traditional, on-campus credits that are required to earn your degree (including dissertator credits) and you are physically present on campus
-
- This means that you must be both enrolled in classes full-time and be physically present on campus in order to maintain lawful F-1 status during your final term (unless your program has a practical training requirement)
- Your on-campus course enrollment is for the full duration of the final semester
-
- Fall/spring semester: 15 weeks
-
- Summer term: must match or exceed the dates of your CPT course summer term enrollment
- The CPT end date does not go beyond the date that final grades are due for that semester or your current I-20 end date, whichever date is earlier
It may be difficult to do CPT outside of the Madison area during your final semester, especially for students in a coursework only degree program (no thesis/dissertation requirement). If you have a practical training offer outside of Madison, you must submit a copy of your on-campus course syllabus to show your in-person meeting times. Students in dissertator status may request an exception to the physical presence status if it is supported by their academic advisor.
Reporting Requirements
During your CPT authorization, you must:
- Report change in U.S. residential address in MyUW within 10 days.
- Report change in permanent foreign address in MyUW within 10 days.
- Complete your CPT course.
-
- If you are not able to complete your CPT course, or you are not able to complete your CPT experience, contact ISS and your academic/career advisor immediately.
Keep proof of your CPT experience for your permanent records.
When CPT Ends
Stop working on the end date of your CPT authorization on page 2 of your CPT I-20.
You do not need a new I-20 at the end of CPT. The I-20 is still valid until the program end date on page 1, as long as you continue to maintain your full-time enrollment.
After your CPT authorization, you must:
- Report change in U.S. residential address in MyUW within 10 days.
- Report change in permanent foreign address in MyUW within 10 days.
- Complete your CPT course.
- If you are unable to complete your CPT course or your CPT experience, contact ISS and your academic/career advisor immediately.
- Keep proof of your CPT experience for your permanent records.
You are required to file taxes on any taxable income earned.
