On July 17, 2026, DHS published a final rule establishing a fixed time period of admission to the U.S. and introducing an extension of stay procedure for F nonimmigrant academic students and J exchange visitors. The final rule goes into effect on September 15, 2026. International Student Services is actively reviewing and updating guidance and processes to align with the rule change.
Most F-1 and J-1 students at UW-Madison are eligible to work on- and off-campus at different times during their studies. Students are responsible for following the regulations that govern international student employment benefits, such as getting approval before starting any off-campus position.
