Tips on Applying for a Social Security Number

Are you a new UW-Madison international student? Have you recently gotten a job on campus?

If you answered yes to the two questions above, then you will need to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) if you do not already have one.

As of the 30th day of classes, ISS has registered your SEVIS record with the US government and you should be able to successfully apply for a Social Security Number (SSN).

Follow the tips below to prepare your application.

F-1 Transfer students:
Make sure you use your newly created I-20 that states “CONTINUED ATTENDANCE” under Form Issue Reason in the first box on page 1. ISS will email you when your I-20 is ready for pick-up.

J-1 Students: You need to apply for on-campus work permission through your sponsor first. Read about it here: https://iss.wisc.edu/employment/j1-employment/
