Staying Safe During Extremely Cold Temperatures

Dangerously cold weather is expected to hit Madison tomorrow. Please review the information below to stay safe!

Temperature:

  • Actual temperature will be approximately -18°F to -8°F (-28°C to -22°C)
  • How cold it feels like (wind chill): as cold as –40°F to –35°F (–40°C to –37°C)

How to appropriately dress for the cold weather:

  • Wear multiple layers of clothing (a base and an insulating layer like a thick sweater and a winter jacket)
  • Wear a hat, gloves, scarf, thick socks, warm shoes
  • Cover as much exposed skin as possible and
  • Limit your time outdoors when you can

How to safely heat your home or room, and other cold-weather tips:

  • Only use devices specifically made for heating an indoor space and follow all safety instructions
    • Do NOT use ovens, stoves or grills
  • Keep heaters away from flammable materials (ex. blankets, curtains, clothing, paper)
  • Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working
  • Charge your mobile devices in case you temporarily lose electricity
  • If you live in a house, leave your faucets on a trickle (both cold and hot water) to avoid letting pipes freeze and potentially burst
  • If you own a vehicle, consider topping off with fuel this afternoon to avoid letting condensation in the tank freeze
  • Allow pets to go outside only as long as absolutely necessary – they can be hurt by extreme temperatures also

Due to the extremely cold temperatures, International Student Services will have VIRTUAL ONLY services

  • Drop-in advising will be virtual only from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m.
  • There will be no in-person services, including document pick up
  • Email, phone and scheduled virtual appointments will continue as usual

Please plan ahead and stay safe during this cold weather.
