Students on OPT should consider international travel carefully and plan ahead of time. You should have the following documents to re-enter the U.S.:
- Passport valid for at least 6 months into the future
- Valid F-1 visa. Visit https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/study.html for most recent information and processing times.
- Valid EAD card
- I-20 with OPT and travel signature less than 6 months old
- Proof of employment or an employment offer
If you need an updated I-20 or an I-20 reprint, you can submit an I-20 Reprint request form to ISS. Processing time may take up to 15 business days.
International travel with a pending OPT application can be risky. If you intend to apply for OPT, you should plan your international travel around your OPT application.
You must be physically present in the U.S. to submit your application to USCIS.
Your re-entry to the U.S. is the decision of Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
