Fall 2017 Orientation

Welcome New International Students!

The ISS staff is looking forward to meeting you and welcoming you to UW-Madison.

Please see the information below about orientation for new students beginning their program or returning on an initial attendance I-20 or DS-2019 for Fall 2017.

Please note, ISS Orientation is mandatory* and is designed to address the needs of international students. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security requires international student visa holders to register with their school before starting their academic program in the United States.

By checking in and attending ISS Orientation, you will be completing this mandatory obligation. Please plan to attend the appropriate ISS Orientation designed for you.

Take advantage of all the orientation events planned for you. We suggest that you arrive in Madison at least 2-3 days before your orientation to ensure a smoother transition to your new environment.

*Degree-seeking undergraduate students must also attend SOAR in order to register for classes.


STEP 1: Log into MyUW

Update your Mailing Address to reflect your local address in Madison.

In your Student Center, also enter an Emergency Contact so that the university can contact someone in case you are injured, missing, or incapacitated. Your emergency contact can be someone here or abroad.

Note: These two systems do not communicate with each other so they need to be updated separately.

Please complete step 1 before coming to ISS to check in.


STEP 2: Check in

ISS check in will take place at on the 2nd Floor of Memorial Library.  Within a few days of arriving, please bring the following documents so that we can scan your documents and verify that you have completed step 1 above:

  1. Passport
  2. I-20 or DS-2019
  3. Local address in Madison*
  4. Emergency contact information*
  5. NetID and password
    *When you come to Memorial Library to check in you should have already updated your local address and emergency contact information in MyUW.

August 21 – August 31
Monday through Friday (no Saturdays or Sundays)
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

September 1st
10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.


STEP 3: Attend ISS orientation

All regular sessions for Fall 2017 ISS Orientation have been completed.  Please see the information below about make-up sessions for ISS orientation.

This is your final chance to complete your mandatory orientation so don’t forget! Plan on attending one of the following sessions:

September 7
3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

September 20
4:00 pm – 5:30 pm

September 28
3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

All sessions will be held in:
Red Gym – Masley Media Room


You are also required to check-in with ISS if you have not done so already.
Please bring the following to the ISS front desk:

  1. I-20 (F-1 students) or DS-2019 (J-1 students)
  2. Passport with Entry Admission Stamp & Visa Stamp (Excluding Canadians)
  3. Local and Foreign Addresses
  4. Emergency Contact Information


Be sure to arrive 10 minutes early.

Late arrivals may be turned away.

Please note: You will need to stay for the entire program.
