Soko Cheng (she/her/hers)
Position title: ISS Peer Advisor
Soko earned her Bachelor’s in Anthropology and Sociology with minors in Gender & Women’s Studies and Social Service at Knox College. Last year, she studied abroad at Chiang Mai University, where she acquired the basics of Thai and she learned more about human rights issues in Southeast Asia. Although she was already interested in research on Southeast Asian communities, the professors she met in Thailand inspired her to pursue graduate research exploring human rights issues in Southeast Asia. Since her parents are Cambodian refugees and she was born in America, studying abroad also gave her the rare opportunity to meet her relatives in Cambodia for the first time. Being a first generation and low-income student herself, she spent three years as a TRIO mentor in hopes of helping undergraduate students find their passions, personal strengths, and educational opportunities available to them. She is currently a first year graduate student in the Asian Languages and Cultures doctoral program.
