Social Security Campus Visit

Employee Compensation and Benefits Services each year coordinates campus visits of the Social Security Administration. When attending this session you should make sure you bring photocopies of the following: Passport, Visa, I-94 Departure Record card and I-20 Form

All F-1 and J-1 students will need a letter from ISS (except J-1s under another sponsor) in order to apply for a Social Security Number. ISS will be available to write such a letter for F-1 students at the workshop, however the following must be true:

  • You must have registered for a full-time course load at least one day before attendance at the workshop.
  • You must bring a signed letter of employment. For graduate students with assistantships, your offer letter is sufficient. For students holding hourly positions, you should bring a letter from your employer stating they will be employing you on an hourly basis.
  • You must have attended a mandatory ISS orientation session prior to your attendance at the workshop.
  • Note to J-1 students: J-1 students will not be able to get an ISS letter at the workshop. If the University of Wisconsin-Madison is your sponsor, you should request employment authorization at ISS (Red Gym, room 217) in advance and bring it with you to the workshop. If the UW-Madison is not your sponsor (in other words, your document was issued by another entity), you should request employment authorization from your sponsor and bring your authorization letter with you to the workshop.
