Photo Contest 2009 Rules

International Student Services invites UW-Madison International Students and family members to participate in our 2009 Photo Contest! Show us YOUR world through pictures!

Submit up to 3 photos total and see if the judges pick YOU as a winner! Choose from the categories below (you may submit photos in more than one category). Winning photos (Best In Show, 2nd Place & 3rd Place) will be displayed at events, in publications, promotional materials, and in the Red Gym Gallery.




Contest Categories:

    1> International Culture (people, traditions, lifestyle etc.)
    2> International Places (urban, rural, landscapes, seascapes, etc.)
    3> Your Best Madison Experience
    4> US Sightseeing (the US from your perspective)

Contest Rules:

  1. Eligibility: UW-Madison full–time international students and family members. Students must hold F-1 or J-1 STUDENT visas. Family members must hold F-2 or J-2 DEPENDENT visa

  1. Photos: Photos must be the original work of the participant and up to 3 photos per participant will be accepted. Please submit digital Jpeg photo(s) in good resolution (1600 X 1200 pixels) AND one hard copy, 4” x 6” glossy print of each submission.(Due to the varied display digital photos can have in different computer programs or screens, judges will only review hard copies. Photos can be printed from CD or Flash Drive at Walgreens, Kinkos, The Camera Company or through online services such as Snapfish or Shutterfly etc… )

  1. Softwares: You may use softwares to enhance your photos but you may NOT change or modify objective contents of your photos. ISS will evaluate photos and entries that do not comply will be eliminated.

  1. Deadline: March 31, 2009

  1. Submition: Please complete the ENTRY FORM and email the form together with the photo(s) in digital format to mcinnis@odos.wisc.edu. Also,please turn in hard copy of photo to ISS, Room 217 Red Gym (Office Hours 10:00 am – 4:00 pm) by the deadline. Complete submission will include:

    • Online Entry Form, including photo titles and photo stories or description.

    • Up to 3 photos, in JPEG format only, attached to email application

    • One 4” x 6” Hard Copy of each photo for judging. List photo title and photographer on the back of the photo. Please submit photos in an envelope with your name.

    • Due to the distortions that digital photos can have on computer screens, judges will only review hard copies.

  1. Permission: In submitting a photo, you are granting ISS royalty-free permission to use, reproduce and distribute your photos in displays related to the contest, future printed and electronic publications, fundraising and promotional materials and the right to use your name and country of residence when giving credit to the photographer.
    2008 Winning Photos have been used for note cards and calendars to purchase. All proceeds will benefit ISS programs and scholarships.

  1. Judging & Prizes: Photos will be judged by a panel of students and professional staff on the criteria of creativity, originality, photo quality and artistic expression. There will be one grand prize in each category and 2nd and 3rd place prizes for the top 12 photos overall. Winning photos will be announced in Access ISS in April 2009. Prizes will be awarded for :

    Best in Show, 2nd Place, 3rd Place ~ International Culture
    Best in Show, 2nd Place, 3rd Place ~ International Places
    Best in Show, 2nd Place, 3rd Place ~ Your Best Madison Experience
    Best in Show, 2nd Place, 3rd Place ~ US Sightseeing
