CELLULAR PHONES
Nowadays many students prefer cell phones which offer many different options for all their calling needs.
LOCAL SERVICE
If you do not live in a University dormitory, you may want telephone service. You will have to pay an installation charge. To install telephone service, call Ameritech telephone company (1-800-924-1000). Ask about the most economical phone service for your needs. Ameritech also provide information on the web at http://www.ameritech.com/lca/.
Other calling options: The front of the phone directory describes several other calling options that you may choose to add to your service. Some of these are: "Call Waiting, " which allows you to take an incoming call while you are already on the phone; "Call Forwarding," which will transfer calls from your home to your office, and "Three-Way Calling," which allows three people in three different places to talk at the same time. Be warned that all of these services can increase your monthly bill!
You must provide your own telephone.
Cell phones are a popular option...
LONG DISTANCE
If you want to be able to make calls to places other than Madison, you must also choose a long distance company when you arrange for telephone installation. Several companies provide long-distance service. They are listed in the Yellow Pages of the telephone directory under "Telephone Companies". When you are choosing a long-distance company, ask if they provide service to the countries you wish to call. You'll need to check on the rules and international calling plans for cheaper rates. Usually, you can make long distance calls at a reduced rate on evenings, weekends, and holidays.
