English Proficiency Requirements

All new International Students need to take the official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). UW-Madison requires a minimum score of 550 on the paper test or a 213 on the computer test for admission consideration. International Students may also submit the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) and a minimum score of 80 is required.

Most of the International Students admitted to UW-Madison have a TOEFL score of at least 577/233.

After arrival to UW-Madison, International Students with TOEFL scores below 580/237 must take the English UW- ESL Assessment Test (ESLAT) to determine placement in ESL classes. Graduate students with a TOEFL score of 580/237 or higher are not required to take the ESLAT on arrival unless told to do so by the Graduate School or by their department. Almost all incoming international undergraduate students, including many transfer students, will take the ESLAT regardless of TOEFL. Please look at your admission documents for details.
