  • INTERNATIONAL GRADUATION SASHES

    ISS is offering students the opportunity to purchase international graduation sashes that may be worn over their robes on graduation day. Students will be able to purchase the sash that represents their home countries for $30.00. If you would like to purchase a sash, bring a personal check or cash to the ISS front desk. Many countries are in stock other sashes will be special ordered so that you may receive it in time for graduation. The last day to place a special order is December 1st.   • ISS OFFICE CLOSURE DURING HOLIDAYS

    The ISS office will be closed on the following days due to the holidays and mandatory furloughs: Thursday, November 26th, 2009 Friday, November 27th, 2009 Thursday, December 24th, 2009 through Friday, January 1st, 2010 **We will be unable to check phone or email messages on these days.**

    After the Thanksgiving break, the office will re-open Monday, November 30th at 10:00 am. Please be sure to obtain travel signatures and collect your documents prior to 4 pm on Wednesday, November 25th if necessary.

    After closing at 4pm on Wednesday, December 23rd for winter break, ISS will not re-open until Monday, January 4th, 2010. Therefore, please plan accordingly, and apply for new documents and travel signatures before the semester ends. Remember that processing time is two weeks for new documents and one business day for travel signatures. If your document will be expiring or you will be traveling abroad over the winter break, you must obtain extensions or travel endorsements BEFORE December 23rd.
  • MFIS THANKSGIVING HOSPITALITY

    Enjoy Thanksgiving Day With a Local Family! Would you like to enjoy the traditional American Thanksgiving celebration with a local family? Madison Friends of International Students (MFIS) invites you to join an American family in their home to share a delicious meal and the cultural tradition of Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, 2009. If interested, please complete the form at http://iss.wisc.edu/mfis/programs/HoliHosp.htm and return it to the MFIS office by fax (608) 263-2838, or by email mfis@odos.wisc.edu. Deadline to sign up is November 20, 2009.
  • WATUMULL SCHOLARSHIP FOR INDIAN STUDENTS
    Deadline: Tuesday, December 1st, 4:00 pm


    International Student Services is looking for one worthy Indian undergraduate or graduate student for the Watumull Scholarship Award. The winner will receive $2,000 and will be announced in Access ISS and on the ISS website. If you were born in India or are a citizen of India, are currently enrolled in a degree program here at UW-Madison, have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, and can demonstrate financial need, you are encouraged to view the application and consider applying. The application is available in the ISS office (Red Gym, room 217) or online. Applications must be turned into the ISS office no later than Tuesday, December 1st at 4pm.
  • 18th ANNUAL RWHC $2,000 RURAL HEALTH PRIZE,
    Deadline: April 15, 2010


    The Hermes Monato, Jr. Prize of $2,000 is awarded annually for the best rural health paper. It is open to all students of the University of Wisconsin (any campus). Students are encouraged to write on a rural health topic for a regular class and then to submit a copy to the Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative as an entry by April 15. Previous award winners as well as judging criteria and submission information are available at http://www.rwhc.com/Awards/MonatoPrize.aspx

  • International Education Week Photo Exhibit
    Monday, November 16 – Friday, November 20
    2nd Floor Gallery, Red Gym and Armory

    The US will celebrate International Education Week (http://iew.state.gov/) November 16 to November 20 and so will UW-Madison. In recognition, ISS along with International Academic Programs and the School of Business International Programs will host an exhibit of prize-winning photos taken in the United States and around the world by international and study abroad students. The exhibit will be on display all week from 8:00am to 8:00pm. It is free and all are welcome to enjoy it throughout the week.
  • International Graduation Celebration
    Wednesday, December 2, 5PM- 7PM
    Wisconsin Alumni Association Lobby

    The Wisconsin Alumni Association and ISS invite all international students graduating in December and exchange students leaving at the semester’s end to a festive reception in celebration of their accomplishments. The evening will include food, music, and farewell speeches. Students are welcome to bring family members, friends and mentors. The event is free, but students are asked to register themselves and their guests at http://www.uwalumni.com/home/int-isgc.aspx.
  • Taste of Cultures: Discover Iran!
    Thursday December 3, 6PM- 8PM
    On Wisconsin Room, Red Gym and Armory

    Iran is a country in the daily news. As a result, we know of its strategic geopolitical import and the vital role it plays in the world economy. But, what else do we know? What of her cultures and customs? Her music, poetry, and dance? What drives her people and inspires her youth? Learn about these and other compelling features of this Persian nation through the lens of Iranian students studying at UW. What better, more interesting source? Take it all in while enjoying authentic Iranian food. Free, but limited to the first 150 people.

  • HOUSING OPTIONS OVER WINTER BREAK

    If you are a student living in the UW residence halls, and you plan to stay in Madison over winter break, it is important to start planning for your temporary housing. Students are supposed to vacate their residence halls within 24 hours of their last exam. The latest you can stay in the hall is until 12:00 noon, December 24th. The halls officially re-open Jan 16th. There are some options for moving back into the dorms early or for securing alternate places to stay. Click here for more information.

    WI Idea Undergraduate Fellowships provide opportunities for undergraduates to collaborate with a community partner and faculty/instructional staff sponsor to meet pressing community needs locally, nationally or internationally. Students earn three credits and receive a stipend (up to $3000 for individuals and $5000 for groups). Additional funding is also available to develop and implement the project.

    The goal of the LGBTA Leadership Institute is to develop future leaders for campus by: orienting them to campus processes; developing a sense of collegiality among future leaders, and improving leadership skills. Anyone can apply for the Leadership Institute; however the goal is to develop future leaders, so we particularly encourage freshman and sophomore applicants. Spaces are limited.   • SPRING COURSES WITH GLOBAL EMPHASIS
    To help students interested in international and global issues find classes that are often scattered across campus, Global Studies has once again compiled a list of UW-Madison courses with global content for Spring 2010 (see http://global.wisc.edu/courses/).
  • HONORS FELLOW PROGRAM
    The Honors Fellow Program seeks to build Honors Community through dialogue about social justice through Inter L&S 180 and 480 courses. Sophomores and Juniors participate in Inter L&S 480, a 3-credit Honors seminar, in the spring semester and then facilitate Inter L&S 180, a 1-credit course for incoming students as Honors Fellows, for which they receive a small stipend.     The Pakistani Students Association presents a culturally enriching and philosophically profound performance, Shab-e-Iqbal (Iqbal Night). Learn about Sir Muhammad Igbal- poet, humanitarian, and philosopher who penned the ideology for the state of Pakistan and was undeniably one of the strongest proponents of the political and spiritual revival of Islam throughout history. Sir Iqbal's message, however, is not limited to just the Muslims of this world. It extends to the human race as a whole.

    Wisconsin Girl Scouts formally invites any international student that are interested to attend Cultural Kitchen this Saturday November 14th at The Madison Hostel 141 S. Butler St (corner of Butler and King). This event is aimed at teaching young girls, involved in Wisconsin Girl Scouts, about different cultures. The girls will be cooking a Tahitian dinner for any international guest who wishes to attend.
