International Student Essay Contest

Sponsored by International Student Services

The presence of international students on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus provides extraordinary learning opportunities, not only to those students, but to everyone in the community. The university's Strategic Plan emphasizes the importance of accelerating internationalization and central to that is the desire to "expand the reach of the university through global knowledge transfer."

The purpose of this essay contest is to increase global knowledge and cross-cultural understanding by providing an opportunity for you to help your fellow students and Madison community members better understand your experiences as an international student. It offers you a creative outlet for expression and the opportunity to further benefit from your experiences by taking the time to reflect on them.

ESSAY TOPIC: The Image of the United States Abroad
What was your image of the U.S. and Americans before you came to the U.S, and how has it changed, if at all?  What is the general view of the U.S. and its people in your home country? When you visit your home country, do you ever feel the need to correct any misperceptions people have? Do you think their perceptions are accurate?
